what to expect at your studio newborn session

Thank you for choosing Snow Pixie Photography to capture your beautiful baby’s Studio Newborn Session! You are going to have fun! The newborn session will be relaxed and will flow at the pace of your baby. There will be plenty of time to nurse, feed, or to cuddle your infant. While I am photographing, you can relax! Remember, this is your photography session, and I want you to enjoy it! Here are a few tips to help make your newborn photography session a wonderful experience!

what to bring:

  • Other than baby, the only things I recommend bringing are 2 extra bottles (if you are bottle feeding), and 2 pacifiers. Both can help soothe baby during their session. If you are nursing, please breast-feed! My studio is a breast friendly zone. If you want some nursing images including, please ask!

  • I have everything you need for your session in my newborn studio including a wide assortment of newborn props such as wraps, furs, outfits, hats, and tie-backs in a variety of different beautiful colors. I will have some items pulled for you, but you are always free to choose anything you see.

  • Please also bring a water bottle for yourself. Due to Covid, I am not offering beverages at this time, and it’s important for new mamas to stay hydrated!

  • If you have any props that you would like included in your session, please let me know on the Style Questionnaire. I’m always happy to include special heirloom items.

day of baby prep:

  • Please keep baby awake for 1-2 hours prior to your newborn session. A bath followed by a full feed work great!

  • Dress baby in clothing that is easy to remove (i.e. zip or snap pjs). No onesies please!

  • Please give baby a full feed just before your session.

  • Note: My studio is 80 degrees to keep baby warm and comfortable. (If you feel too warm, let me know).

  • Depending on your session and preferences, I may photograph baby diapered, in an outfit, or partially naked (but always modest). We always start with baby’s diaper on.

what to wear:

  • Neutrals are always lovely (white, cream, grey, or black), as they create timeless images with the focus on baby.

  • However, think about what you want to see in a framed print on your wall. If you love color, be colorful! I recommend no large prints, and to keep outfit choices to 2-3 colors.

  • I’m always happy to help with styling — email me with questions!

  • I can offer hair and make-up for an additional fee if requested in advance.

a few other things to keep in mind:

I always follow baby’s lead and never guarantee any specific poses or images. Your baby will do what your baby with do, and whatever that is, is perfect! Although I will gently guide your baby, if baby is not comfortable in certain poses, we will try something else, and I never place baby in any position where baby is not fully and naturally supported. Your baby’s safety and comfort are paramount to me. I am happy to photograph babies awake or sleepy. Please note that with awake babies, there will be less variation in posing, and more capturing of your baby’s natural expressions.
